Be Strong and Courageous

It only just occurred to me that one of the most frequent commands God makes is, "Be strong and courageous." And these words are often offered to men - men we think are valiant in battle, men that we retrospectively view with admiration and an almost indecent adulation, men we associate with strength and power.

He must have known that this world is filled with so many things and people who instill fear in us, who cause us to cower under rocks like helpless little sheep, who attempt to steal the very joy that He has kept for us in jars of clay.

Be strong and courageous. Stand firm. Be strong and immovable.

So easy and yet so hard.

But thank God that it is He "who enables us...to stand firm for Christ." (2 Cor 1:21)

I don't have to try in my own strength. I need only surrender and He will make me like a fortified city that cannot be captured, like an iron pillar or a bronze wall (Jer 1:18), protected against all forces of the world by the power and love of God.
